DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, reports, accounts, copies of published material, leaflets annual reports and funding requests relating to various United Kingdom based international peace organisations. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The Institut Henri Dunant (IHD) in Geneva is the academic and educational arm of the International Red Cross. In 1979 the insititute hosted a conference on humanitarian law in Africa. The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) was established in 1957 with the objectives of 1) eliminating British nuclear weapons, 2) the abolition of weapons of mass destruction, 3) a less militarised Europe, and 4) ending nuclear power as an energy source. The United Nations Association UK (UNA-UK) is a civil society organisation established in 1945 to advocate and analyse the activities and policies of the UN. Nature of support: The Trust turned down a 1979 grant application to allow government representatives to attend the IHD conference in Geneva, feeling that discussing humanitarian law in war came close to accepting the legitimacy of war. In 1981 the Fund approved a travel grant of £200 to allow Quaker Group for World Peace Through World Law convenor Mervyn Taggart to attend a Friend Seminar in Geneva. The Fund refused to support the group itself, citing a lack of information on its activities. The Fund also supported a number of travel grant applications for international peace work, mainly relating to conferences. In 1982 the Fund turned down a general grant application from the CND's Birmingham branch, feeling that its own membership should be relied upon to sustain growth. In 1983 the Fund approved a grant of £2,000 to the UNA-UK to allow it to expand its work in international arms control through the employment of professional staff.
