Funding source(s): Applicant overview: Dr. Julie Dahlitz is an Australian specialist in the law of outer space. She joined the Bradford University Department of Peace Studies pending taking up an advisory position at the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) on issues pertaining to arms control in space. Her initial appointment was blocked by the United States in 1984 though she was subsequently appointed in 1985 where she continued her research into weapons in space. In 1989 Dahlitz proposed a project with the aims of, 1) identifying and examining the chief problem areas, and to provide solutions, with special reference to efforts to prohibit space weapons and chemical weapons, 2) organising an international endeavour to reformulate international law in relation to arms control, and 3) to disseminate the results attained so as to elicit a response from a wide range of international, professional and academic bodies with the ultimate objective of assisting both bilateral (superpowers) negotiations and multilateral (UN) negotiations.
