Applicant overview: For many years the Friends Service Council had considered the need to improve the Friends Centre in Geneva. Interest by the Trust in this project led to a scheme to build a new centre to house the conferences and seminars office as well as the Quaker International Affairs Representative. The Friends International Centre was subsequently referred to as the Quaker United Nations Office (QUNO). QUNO in Geneva focuses on topics of concern to Quakers. It fosters informal, off-the-record discussions between governments, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and experts on problematic issues. Human rights and refugees programme work includes the issues of women in prison, children of prisoners, conscientious objection to military service and protection of refugees, particularly the over-use of detention. Nature of support: In 1985 the Trust approved three annual grants to QUNO Geneva of £1,000 per annum.
