Applicant overview: BASIC was established in 1986 for the purpose of educating opinion in the US and UK about a possible change of defence policy in Britain, by organising a better flow of information on national security issues between the two countries. BASIC functions primarily as a research organisation and became a registered charity in 1991. Nature of support: In 1986 the Fund made a single grant of £5,000 to establishing the UK branch of BASIC. In 1987 the Fund approved three annual grants of £7,500 per annum. In 1988 the Trust made a grant of £17,500 towards a conference entitled 'NATO: 40 Years On' proposed by BASIC.
