| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, CV, reviews, leaflets, project proposals and funding requests relating to British Council of Churches (BCC) and other international peace applications. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The BCC, now Churches Together in Britain and Ireland, became a registered charity in 1969. It aims to enable member Churches to work together for the advancement of the Christian religion, the relief of poverty, the advancement of education and any other charitable purpose. BCC seeks to further these objects by providing opportunities for representatives of the Churches to meet together and to share some of their resources in the pursuance of jointly agreed activities. Unipal (A Universities’ Trust for Educational Exchange with Palestinians) seeks to facilitate a two-way process of education; providing English-language teaching in Palestinian refugee camps in the West Bank, Gaza and Lebanon and introducing British students to a knowledge and understanding of the situation and daily lives of refugees. Unipal sends volunteers to the Middle East to work with Palestinians on a short-term basis in the summer, to teach English or to take part in other activities as needed and brings Palestinian teachers of English to Britain in order to study language courses and refresh their language by living with British families. Nature of support: In 1981 the Trust approved the underwriting of up to £1,000 towards the travel costs of a delegation of BCC officials to the Middle East. In 1982 the Trust made a grant of £450 to allow a BCC member to attend a conference in Yugoslavia. In 1983 the Trust allocated £3,000 per annum to the BCC Peace Forum initiative over three years. This grant was subsequently extended for six years. In 1986 the Trust approved three annual grants of £5,000 per annum to Unipal. A number of other small grants are also referenced.
