Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The United Nations Association of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a civil society organisation that was founded in 1945. The UNA has been a leading advocate for the UN since its inception. The UNA pre-dates the UN and grew out of the League of Nations Union. UNA held its first meeting before the UN Charter had been finalised. UNA aims to, 1) connect people to the work and values of the UN, 2) influence decision-makers and opinion-shapers to support UN goals, 3) explain how the UN works and what it can realistically achieve, 4) stimulate debate and action on how to make the UN more effective, and 5) equip members and supporters to further these aims. Nature of support: In 1983 Trustees and Directors approved a grant of £4,725 to pay for a conference of the European Regional Conference of the United Nations Association at Selly Oak. In 1984 the Fund approved three annual grants of £1,000 per annum to the UNA. That same year the Trust approved three annual grants of £10,500 toward the salary of a UNA press officer. In 1987 the Trust approved a single grant of £7,500 for a special UN session on disarmament plus a further £2,500 for underwriting. Most of this total was not required and was transferred for use in Middle East seminars.
