| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, file sheet, reports, financial papers, grant terms and conditions, agendas, general information and due diligence form, copy declaration of trust and project proposal relating to the George Bell Institute (GBI). Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The Institute was founded with the support of the Birmingham-based Barrow Cadbury Trust in September 1996 in honour of George Bell, Bishop of Chichester from 1929 to 1958. An ecumenist and an internationalist, Bell is often remembered as a friend of the oppressed, a patron of writers and artists, a scholar of distinction and as a generous advocate for humanity at large. The purpose of the Institute is to search out writers, scholars and artists facing difficulties in any country and to provide the resources they may need to make their voice heard. It seeks to welcome them into an international community of life and thought where their vision will be valued and encouraged. GBI became a registered charity in 1997. Nature of support: In 2007 the Trust agreed to a grant of £25,000 as a one-off payment to help enable the Institute to establish a financially sustainable programme. Minutes: T07/08-33. Notes: Copy minutes are not included though minutes are referenced in the file sheet. File organised by subject. File not numbered. |
