Founded in 1884, the Society is at the forefront of developing political ideas and public policy on the left. The Society aims to promote, 1) greater equality of power, wealth and opportunity, 2) the value of collective action and public service, 3) an accountable, tolerant and active democracy, 4) citizenship, liberty and human rights, 5) sustainable development, and 6) multilateral international cooperation. Nature of support: In 2003 the Fund approved three annual grants at £18,000 for 2003/2004, £50,000 for 2004/2005 and £12,000 for 2005/2006 towards core funding for the Commission on Improving Life Chances for Disadvantaged Children and their Families. In 2005 the Fund agreed to a single grant of £20,000 to fund qualitative research on Winning the Political Argument: Understanding Public Attitudes Towards Child Poverty and Life Chances.
