DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, plans, funding requests, minutes, newspaper cuttings and reports relating to the Black Community Workers project (BCW), later the Handsworth Black Community Workers project. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The BCW was created as a result of the union of Handsworth Adventure Playground, Double Zero Club and 40 Hall Road. In its funding application the BCW defines itself as part of the West Indian black community with an emphasis on homeless youth, school and education, unemployment, bad police relationships and cultural activities. BCW also aims to form a housing association particularly to meet the needs of homeless youth and later pre-school children. The Harambee Housing Association (HHA) charity was subsequently created to this end with the support of the Birmingham City Council Social Services Department and Birmingham Settlement. Nature of support: The Fund provided £3,500 to support the initial HHA work and approved a further £1,000 in 1974 to support the purchase of a bus for use for the pre-school programme created by BCW. The Trust provided a three-year grant to employee a secretary for the BCW through the HHA from 1974 onwards.
