LevelFile
Date1976 - 1977
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, reports, agendas, newspaper cuttings and funding requests relating to the Harambee Housing Association (HHA) and its projects. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The Black Community Workers (BCW) project was created as a result of the union of Handsworth Adventure Playground, Double Zero Club and 40 Hall Road. The Harambee Housing Association (HHA) charity was created through the BCW with the support of the Social Services Department and the Birmingham Settlement to address youth homelessness and pre-school care. The HHA established the Marcus Garvey Pre-School Project, later the Marcus Garvey Educational Project (MGEP) to, in their words, 1) provide a social situation for children of pre-school age (2 years to 5 years) that will constitute a real learning situation, 2) provide a structural programme of educational activities relevant to the pre-school experience which will enable the children to develop necessary skill, including language development and concepts, 3) provide a secure environment which is responsive to the values of the cultural heritage of black children and will enable them to develop a positive identification with that culture, 4) prepare pre-school children for the school environment, 5) encourage parents to become involved in the education of their children and further understand their children's needs, and 6) impress upon parents the importance of the pre-school years and play activities involving toys etc. The HHA also has an interest in expanding the MGEP to include a nursery and to carry out adult literacy work through the establishment of an adult literacy centre. Nature of support: The Trust provided a £1,000 grant to send three BCW staff to an International Voluntary Service (IVS) camp in West Africa. A further £3,000 Trust grant was provided to support the Marcus Garvey Summer Project. A grant of £12,300 was made to contribute to the acquisition of property for the Marcus Garvey Pre-School Project plus staff support though this was the maximum commitment the Trust was willing to make on this score. Minutes: B&GSCT 4184, B&GSCT 4185, B&GSCT 4223, B&GSCT 4245, BCF 1551. Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File not numbered.
