LevelFile
Date1973 - 1975
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, telegrams and accounts relating to a joint Harambee Housing Association (HHA)/Afro-Caribbean Self Help Organisation (ACSHO) trip to Tanzania. Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: ACSHO describes itself firstly as a community orientated organisation devoted to maintaining a healthy community with egalitarian relationships regardless of race or age. The Harambee Housing Association (HHA) charity was created through Black Community Workers (BCW) with the support of the Birmingham City Council Social Services Department and Birmingham Settlement to address youth homelessness and pre-school care. Nature of support: In 1973 HHA and ACSHO applied to the Fund for a travel grant to send three staff on a trip to Tanzania. Initially the plan proposed to send five staff and twenty five to thirty young people from the Handsworth area. Three individuals subsequently made the trip with tickets purchased by the Fund. Telegrams from the Jamaican and Trinidadian Embassies in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia were subsequently received by the Fund requesting further emergency funds which were duly paid. Minutes: B&GSCT 3726. Notes: It is uncertain why the party found themselves in Ethiopia when their destination was Tanzania. Of political interest one of the party was the chief witness to a recent shooting near the Harambee offices and left the country prior to the completion of the police investigation against the advice of Anthony Wilson, Administrative Secretary. File organised by date from newest to oldest. File not numbered.
