Date1978 - 1980
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, leaflets, newsletters and funding requests relating to Christians Against Racism and Fascism (CARAF). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: CARAF was formed in June 1977 from a conference held at Friends House attended by Friends, Catholics and the Race Relations Unit of the British Council of Churches. Its membership is drawn primarily from clergy active in communities experiencing inner city decline and an increase in non-white church attendance. In its inaugural newsletter CARAF describes its aims as, 1) to unite in the love of God, and our neighbours in the face of racist and fascist ideology, 2) to act as a broad ecumenical voice from the Christian Church on issues of racism and fascism, 3) to promote an awareness among Christians of the dangers of fascism and the threats presented by fascist organisations, 4) to assist the development of local Christian initiatives aimed at reducing the effectiveness of fascist propaganda, 5) to encourage church leaders to oppose at the national level the divisive policies and activities of organisations such as the National Front and the National Party, and 6) to co-operate with other initiatives aimed at promoting racial justice and opposing fascism. Nature of support: The Trust made an initial grant of £2,500 to support the salary of a full time worker, though this payment was undertaken by the Fund owing to the non-charitable status of CARAF. A further £1,000 grant was made in 1979. After its initial support the Fund concluded that CARAF's efforts were making little headway in public opinion and decided not to make further grants. Minutes: B&GSCT 4609, BCF 1740, BCF 1836. Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File labelled '3/12'.
