LevelFile
Date1981 - 1984
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, reports, leaflets and funding requests relating to the Workers Education Association (WEA): Industrial Co-ordinating Unit. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: The ICU was formed as an offshoot of the Shayid Udham Singh Welfare Centre that serves the Asian community in the Smethwick area. As many of the queries referred to the centre were of an employment nature it was felt a more specialist approach was needed. The ICU was setup to work with existing trade union structures (including the Midlands Regional Office of the Trades Union Congress) to identify problems facing Asian workers and to find support among trade unions. ICU also carries out educational work in the trade union community to share its knowledge with other labour organisations. Nature of support: The Fund provided two annual £7,000 grants for the ICU beginning in 1981. Funding was increased in 1983 to £10,000 due to the success of the ICU project. Minutes: B&GSCT 5805. Notes: File organised by date from newest to oldest. File labelled '3/6/6'.
