DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, newsletters, newspaper cuttings, agendas and funding requests relating to various race relations projects in the West Midlands and nationwide. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: This file contains a number of applications under the race relations portfolio. Towards Racial Justice (TRJ) was set up as a national action group based in Brixton. It operates a telephone service, Release, for black people in trouble and opposes improper police behaviour against black people. TRJ also operates a newspaper, 'Race Today'. The Afro-Caribbean Association for Economic and Social Service (ACAFESS) was formed to provide a number of social services in Balsall Heath. ACAFESS works primarily with West Indian families, arranging group outings for families and young people and providing accommodation to those in need. West Indian Workshop (WIW) was launched as a skills training project for young West Indian girls in 1976. Nature of support: The Trust provided £20,000 to TRJ for its operational costs in 1973. In 1975 the Fund agreed to underwrite a £5,000 loan to the TRJ. In 1975 the Fund made a grant of £350 to ACAFESS to allow the office manager to offer a small honorarium to an office assistant, most of the staff being volunteers. In 1976 the Fund approved a grant of £280 to cover costs already incurred by the trainer for materials. The Trust made a further grant of £570 to the project.
