Applicant overview: The Bangladesh Centre was established in 1980 out of the Bangladesh Workers Association (BWA), which itself emerged as part of the Indian Workers Association (IWA). In 1983 the Centre became a registered charity. It aims to promote the advancement of education and good citizenship amongst the people of Bangladesh ethnic origin living in the environs of the Centre. Nature of support: In 1978 the Fund approved three annual grants of up to £5,500 to the BWA. In 1982 the Fund agreed to act as guarantor of the Centre's rent for five years in addition to annual rent payments of £1,000 per annum. That same year the Trust agreed to three annual grants of £2,000 each towards the Centre's running costs pending charitable registration. In 1983 and 1985 the Paul S. Cadbury Trust made small grants toward holding educational Christian, Hindu and Islamic religious festivals at Ladywood Primary School. The Headmaster also leads the BWA. In 1983 the Trust agreed to assume the outstanding grant payments of the Trust. In 1984 the Trust agreed to a one-off payment of £1,000 towards refurbishment costs. A further £640 was subsequently committed. In 1984 three further annual grants were approved at £2,000 per annum for running costs plus £10,500 for salary costs during the same period. In 1986 Clare Short received a Fund grant of £1,500 for visiting the families of constituents excluded from the UK. That same year a further travel grant of £1,000 was approved. In 1988 the Trust approved three further annual grants of £2,000 per annum.
