The East Staffordshire Commission for Racial Equality (ESCRE) was formed in 1982 to provide legal advice to people living in east Staffordshire. The Voluntary Organisation Liaison Council for Under Fives (VOLCUF) was created to bring together children's specialists including psychologists, paediatricians and playgroup leaders, to review the needs of children under five. This work includes research into the needs of ethnic minority children. Somerville Junior School, Small Heath, serves a largely poor, Asian community. The school is twinned with a primary school in Yorkshire. A number of other individuals and organisations are also included in this file. Nature of support: In 1983 on the recommendation of Southfield Trustees a grant of £500 was made to ESCRE to support its advice service. In 1983 the Fund made a grant of £350 (subsequently amended) towards the typing costs of a manuscript on Nigeria written by a priest. That same year the Trust allocated £3000 to VOLCUF to allow its volunteers to attend a conference in Birmingham on ethnic minority children. In 1985 the Trust made a grant of £250 to Somerville Junior School to help cover the expenses of a trip to Yorkshire. A number of other grants are also included.
