| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, project proposals and funding requests relating to the Wolverhampton Interpreting and Translation Service (WITS). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: The WITS project was created in 1982 to provide translation services in Wolverhampton along similar lines to an earlier scheme established in Birmingham, the Birmingham Interpretation and Translation Service (BITS). The aims of WITS are 1) to provide a reliable and accurate interpreting and translation service, 2) to work towards overcoming language difficulties as an obstacle to obtaining services and rights, 3) to review and monitor existing policies and provisions attempting to meet the needs of non-English speakers, 4) to assist agencies in developing services responsive to the needs of those with language difficulties, and 5) to act as a forum, providing an opportunity for those whose native language is not English. Nature of support: In 1982 the Trust made an offer of £2,500 to start-up costs associated with WITS though this amount was not called upon. Minutes: B&GSCT 5574, B&GSCT 5605. Notes: File organised from newest to oldest. File numbered '3/6/3'. |
