LevelFile
Date1987 - 1989
DescriptionGrant file containing correspondence, minutes, project proposal, grant overview, programme, leaflets, public information material and funding requests relating to the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) Urban Unit and Black Caucus Conference. Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: NCVO began in 1919 as the National Council of Social Services, following a legacy from Edward Vivian Birchall who died of wounds in France during World War I. Since this time NCVO continues to support the sector and speak to government against an ever-changing social background. Many now well-established voluntary organisations started out as projects within NCVO, including Age Concern, Citizens Advice Bureaux and Community Matters. During the early 1980s NCVO expanded its work on the UK's multi-racial society and its positive implications for society. The National Black Caucus is a national network of black organisations and individuals, the main role of which is to collate and disseminate information of relevance to black communities and to devise strategies for the co-ordination and implementation of all policies and issues pertinent to the lives of black peoples. The Black Caucus Conference is held annually to examine racism and urban policy and to develop strategies that focus, confront and minimise racism. Nature of support: The Trust approved a grant of £3,000 for the 1987 conference apparently paid through the NCVO. Minutes: No minutes cited. Notes: File organised from newest to oldest. File not numbered.
