Applicant overview: Frank Foster was involved in a series of experimental prison/probation projects of interest to the Cadbury Trusts including hostel staff training, the Frank Foster Fund, the Plymouth Probation Committee and the Penrose Trust for aftercare of Pentonville prisoners with alcoholism problems. Foster was also brought on as a consultant to the Southfield Trust in 1972 at the time the Southfield Hostel was being sold to the Middlesex Probation Trust. Nature of support: In 1970 the Trust approved a grant of up to £3,000 to send a party of London probation officers to the United States and Canada to establish contacts with North American probation agencies. The Trust granted £750 towards the cost of a house for families visiting menfolk in the prison on the Isle of Wight. The Southfield Trust agreed to pay £2,400 to Foster for consultancy fees out of their own funds. In 1975 the Southfield Trust approved a bridging loan of up to £16,000 if needed for costs arising from the sale of Foster's home and move to new premises. Southfield directors also approved a £1,000 grant towards an appeal for a hydrotherapy swimming pool for children at Gaynes Hall.
