Applicant overview: This file consists of a number of small grant applications made by the police, primarily in Handsworth. Nature of support: In 1978 the Fund paid a grant for £200 originally approved by the Trust to purchase sports equipment for the non-charitable Handsworth Sports and Recreation Club. The Fund also approved a grant of £150 for a camping trip organised by Handsworth police for black families to the Lake District. A Household Survey of the Experience of Crime in Aston by an Oxford University Department of Geography research student was allocated a grant of up to £750. Lord Scarman, appointed to lead the commission, found that a complex combination of social, political and economic factors led to the riots. File organised from newest to oldest.
