Nature of support: Barrow Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: In 2002 the Fawcett Society proposed to establish a one-year Commission on Gender and Justice. The Commission was established in response to an increase in women entering the criminal justice system and the under-representation of women as decision makers in the criminal justice system. Vera Baird QC MP acted as chair of the Commission, running a series of seminars, on-line discussions and public hearings. Pressure by the Commission led government to test a scheme offering alternatives to custodial sentences for women offenders. Nature of support: In 2006 the Trust approved a grant of £15,000 towards a campaign to encourage alternatives to custody for women offenders plus £50,000 to follow up work by the Commission by scoping a new project to examine the access of women to justice as a whole.
