The Cobden Trust (later the Civil Liberties Trust) became a registered charity in 1963. Its aims include the promotion and dissemination of knowledge and understanding amongst the general public of the rights, liberties and duties of all citizens and public servants, the promotion of research into social and other allied fields of study with particular reference to rights, liberties and duties, the procurement and publication of books, films, lectures etc. and the relief of poverty. The Birmingham Citizens Advice Bureau (BCAB) was formed in 1939 and provides free, confidential and impartial advice to everybody regardless of race, sex, disability, sexuality, nationality, ethnicity, religion and belief on a variety of subjects including money management. A number of applications by local courts relate to repairs and improvements on court facilities. Nature of support: In 1978 on the advice of Southfield Trustees the Trust approved a grant to the Cobden Trust of up to £2,000 to complete work on a plea bargaining report. In 1982 Southfield Trustees also recommended a single grant of £5,000 to BCAB's money advice service. In 1979 Trust offered to pay for the cost of double glazing the windows of the old and new Birmingham Children's Courts though this offer was not followed up. In 1984 an education grant of £7,170 was made by the Trust to allow a student to be funding for research at Goldsmiths College into a review of the workings of the youth custody provisions of the 1982 Criminal Justice Act plus a further £490 to publish the findings.
