Applicant overview: Work by the NCCL on prisoner rights was initially supported by the Trust in 1978 with the formation of a prisoner information and advice centre. The aim of the centre is to handle queries from prisoners, their families and friends, to give advice and information on the methods of pursuing enquiries through official channels, to refer cases, where appropriate, to other statutory and voluntary organisations, to publish findings and to publicise the project at the national and international levels. NCCL also aims to establish a prisoner ombudsman. Nature of support: In 1979 on the recommendation of Southfield Trustees the Trust agreed to two annual grants of £6,000 per annum to NCCL. In 1985 the Trust approved a grant of £10,000 to the NCCL National Prisons Project subject to the NCCL finding the balance of £30,000 first. In 1986 the Trust approved a single grant of £2,500 towards the cost of a proposed NCCL guide to the welfare of prisoners abroad. Minutes: B&GSCT 5946, B&GSCT 6624, ST 40/79, ST 31/84, ST 16/85.
