Applicant overview: In 1973 the Home Office instigated a scheme to establish two neighbourhood borstals at Hewell Grange and Hindley respectively. The Glenthorne Youth Treatment Centre (GYTC) in Erdington is a purpose-built residential treatment centre for young people that opened in 1978. At the time of its opening it could accommodate 62 children aged between 12 and 19. The children coming into Glenthorne had each been sent there from the courts. The GYTC was run by the Department of Health. Nature of support: In 1978 Southfield Trustees recommended a grant of £1,000 to Hindley Borstal, near Manchester, to establish a centre for community work by Borstal trainees at the request of Frank Foster. This was approved by the Trust. In 1986 the Southfield Trust recommended a grant of £250 for a festival held by the GYTC.
