Funding source(s): Barrow Cadbury Fund Ltd. Applicant overview: Merfyn Turner was active throughout his life in penal reform. He visited prisoners, advocated hostels and after-care. He established Norman House in 1954 as a prototype halfway house for offenders. In addition to his hostel work Turner carried out a series of visits to overseas prisoners, especially those incarcerated in Turkey. Turner died in 1991. Nature of support: In 1984 the Fund approved a single grant of £500 towards a trip to Turkey. Similar grants were made for 1986 and 1987. Minutes: BCF 2420, BCF 3015.
