Applicant overview: The CND was created in 1974 by two Friends, Felicity McArtney and Lisa Huber, to, 1) assist communities to affect fundamental change for the good of society, 2) actively encourage participation in and shared responsibility for those resources and institutions within our society, 3) relate these institutions and agencies to the needs of the communities and to foster co-operation between the communities and the agencies which serve them, 4) provide a base for the training of community workers and for the dissemination of information, 5) promote research and evaluation into methods and philosophy of community development and any other relevant areas, 6) demonstrate to the statutory agencies in Northern Ireland the need for neighbourhood community work, to show that it is as necessary as any form of community care and to encourage government support, and, 7) promote formal and informal education as an integral part of the community development programme. Since its inception the emphasis of the Centre has shifted from staff training to offering educational opportunities in the communities in which staff work. This has led to a greater need to specialists in law, welfare rights, housing etc. The CND employed six staff as of 1981. Nature of support: The Trust agreed to maintain its support for the CND at £5,000 per annum until 1986 with additional under-writing at £2,500 in 1984 decreasing to £1,500 by 1986.
