Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Paul S. Cadbury Trust. Applicant overview: This file relates primarily to the support of the Shelter National Campaign for the Homeless (SNCH) in opposing government changes to lodging and board policy and in commissioning research to determine the impacts of this legislation on the black community in Birmingham. The Shape Housing Association Ltd. is a housing association that carries out projects to determine how to best meet the housing needs of vulnerable and minority groups, including the black youth population. The Handsworth Law Centre was created to provide legal advice to the community with substantial support from the Birmingham City Council. Nature of support: In 1985 the Trust provided a grant for £3,000 to support research carried out by the Birmingham University Department of Social Administration (BUDSA) into the effects of government policy changes on board and lodging in Birmingham. Further funds were provided for this work in 1986. The Trust also provided a £5,000 grant to Shelter to support its legal appeal against government changes to housing policy. A small grant was made by the Paul S. Cadbury Trust to commission a brochure containing illustrations by Handsworth born art student Brian Rhoden of Selly Manor and Minworth Greaves. File 'a' contains the majority of the documentation on housing including newspaper cuttings and correspondence relating to the sacking of staff from the Handsworth Law Centre in 1986. File 'b' contains correspondence between Anthony Wilson and Shape on the instigation of possible special projects. Files numbered '7/11'.
