Applicant overview: In 1986 the Bishop of Birmingham, Hugh Montefiore proposed a project to follow up on the work of the Archbishop's Commission on Urban Priority Areas (ACUPA). The Bishop proposed forming a twelve member commission plus chair to draft a report on 1) developments in Birmingham through the ongoing recession, 2) a description of how Birmingham churches have reacted to the ACUPA report, and 3) a series of short readable reports on the present situation in Birmingham vis-à-vis urban policies, poverty, unemployment, housing, health, social care, community work, young people, leisure, education, recreation and training.
