| Description | Grant file containing correspondence, minutes, agendas, accounts and funding requests relating to the Women's Film Consortium (WFC). Funding source(s): Barrow and Geraldine S. Cadbury Trust, Minority Arts Programme. Applicant overview: WFC was set up in 1979 by a group of community leaders, particularly from Highgate. Its initial aim was to formalise a film booking network that had been operating informally in the Balsall Heath and Highgate areas of Birmingham. The WFC appeals primarily to women on low incomes who would often be unable to see films in commercial cinemas. The aims of the WFC are to 1) provide a resource for women and girls in the inner city and overspill estates, 2) provide film and video for locally based screening, with crèche facilities, 3) provide easy and low cost access to videos and films for educational and recreational purposes, 4) give information on relevant films and videos for use with groups wishing to raise and discuss issues (e.g. racism and sexism), 5) provide a library with videos for hire, a space to view material, use catalogues etc., and 6) encourage discussion on how the lives of people are portrayed through the media. Nature of support: On the advice of Minority Arts Programme Trustees the Trust approved a grant of £2,500 necessary to secure matching funds from West Midlands Arts. Minutes: B&GSCT 6475, MAP 42/86. Notes: File organised from newest to oldest. File not numbered. File marked 'JM'. |
