Title'The Housing Game' / 'Direct Works Show' / 'Direct Labour Show'
LevelSeries
Date1979 - 1982
DescriptionThis production was prepared with the help of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians [UCATT] and the Sandwell Tenants' Liaison Committee. It considered the building trade, particularly Direct Labour Organisations [DLOs] and the efforts of tenants' organisations to combat problems such as dampness and disrepair.

'The Housing Game' was initially performed in labour clubs, community halls and similar venues around the West Midlands. Audiences primarily consisted of tenants and building workers. Banner Theatre later toured the show further afield, including a series of performances to tenants' organisations in London.

After the original performance run of 'The Housing Game', a related show was developed called 'The Direct Works Show' [also referred to as the 'Direct Labour Show']. This considered the accelerating rate of change in council tendering processes, as it affected the building trades generally and council direct labour organisations in particular.

Records contained in this series cover many aspects of the building industry, both nationally and at a local level. The focus within the West Midlands is primarily on Sandwell Council, with one of Banner's contacts being employed by that local authority. Issues covered include tenants' rights and complaints and workers' rights and working conditions in local direct labour organisations. The move towards private sector firms being awarded council construction contracts is recorded.
