| Description | This file provides an insight to changes in approach within the labour movement to the 'People's March' Campaign in 1982 and 1983. Papers include:
/1 a Revised route plan for the Jubilee Arts / Banner Theatre / SPAM performances, dated 02/09/1982. [contrast this with the confirmed plan dated 08/09/1982 in MS 1611/B/15/1]. Note: the original was on heat sensitive paper and has therefore been copied onto archive quality paper for preservation purposes.
/2 a bundle of papers referring to the press statement issued by the Midlands Peoples Campaign for Jobs in August 1982. These include: /2/a an annotoated copy of the press release dated 24/08/1982. This refers to impact of the current levels of unemployment and the forthcoming marches to Birmingham and multi-cultural festival. Note: At the time of catlaloguing, it is unclear if the annotations were made by members of the Campaign or Banner Theatre. /2/b an undated note marked 'Stop Press' from Tricia Davis, Chairwoman of the Midlands Campaign with instructions and requests for help with the forthcoming press release, marches and festival. /2/c an undated letter from Tricia Davis to [potential] supporters of the Campaign, requesting help with the forthcoming press release, marches and festival. This is aimed at members of the wider labour movement than /2/d below. /2/d a letter from Sid Platt, co-ordinator of the Midlands Campaign to regional union secretaries. It is dated 16/08/1982 and requests help with the forthcoming press release, marches and festival. /2/e a leaflet for the planned sequence of 5 marches assembleing in Birmingham for a mult-cultural festival in Summerfield Park on 18/09/1982.
/3 Papers considering the nature of the Midlands People's Campaign in 1983 include: /3/a Details of a a resolution approved by Redditch Town Committee and Tamworth Town Committee and passed overwhelmingly by the Midlands Campaign Forum of 13/11/1982. This resolution called for a move away from regional marches and multi-cultural festival and a focus on specific issues directly of concern to unemployed people. /3/b a report by Tricia Davis about the campaign in the Midlands in 1983 [nd]. This included a summary of the Midlands Campaign Forum of 13/11/1982 and an assessment of the likely impact of the withdrawal of support by the TUC and the Labour Party for a national march, as they commenced campaigning for the forthcoming General Election. In the light of these calls for change in the nature of the Campaign, the Chairwoman outlined elements that she felt should not be atlered and suggestions on possible ways forward in 1983 were offered for consideration by the forthcoming AGM. /3/c a letter dated 02/12/1982 from Tricia Davis announvcing the AGM of the Midlands People's Campaign for Jobs for 08/01/1983. /3/d an undated letter from Ann Lee to members of the Birmingham Town Committee, concerning the forthcoming AGM for the Midlands People's Campaign for Jobs. This called for consideration of the role of Birmingham Town Committee and proposals for action to be presented at the AGM.
/4 papers relating to Birmingham Town Committee of the Midlands Campaign for Jobs include: /4/a Issue number one of the Birmingham Newsletter [January 1983] /4/b attached to the newsletter is a letter from the co-ordinator of Birmingham Town Committee dated 27/01/1983 [incorrectly marked 1982]. This provides details of intended activities during 1983 and meeting details for February 1983. /4/c an undated letter to members of the Town Committee, advising of the proposed activites for 1983 t obe dicsussed at the forthcoming meeting on 23/02/1982.
/5 A copy of the agreed route for the People's March for Jobs 1983, commnecing in Glasgow on 23/04/1983 and ending in central London on 05/06/1983. This copy is marked for Marion Pike and also has a handwritten message for Pat [?] from Sid [Platt?]. |
