| AdminHistory | This production was developed as phase 2 of the joint Banner Theatre and Jubilee Arts anti-racist project [phase 1 was 'Sweat Shop']. 'Redemption Song' used physical theatre, political text, slides, recorded voices and music to link stories from African asylum seekers, the British Black experience and the Liverpool Dock Strike of the mid 1990s.
The experiences of Sita Camara were drawn upon. A political refugee from the Ivory Coast, Sita's fight for civil and human rights was depicted. The show examined British immigration policy and Western support for oppressive regimes in the developing world.
'Redemption Song' was written by Cheryl Martin and directed by Amani Naphtali. Paula Boulton and Aidan Jolly were tour managers and Colin Whiskens was technical assistant for the tour of the show.
'Redemption Song' went on a national tour, but this collapsed in June 1997, causing major financial problems for Banner Theatre. |
