| Description | These annotated transcripts are of recordings made in Woolley, Yorkshire on 08/01/1974. Woolley Miners were active in picketing sites at various locations during the 1972 strike.
Striking miners' withdrawal from accommodation provided by students at the University [?] of Essex is noted, because of the perceived militancy of those students who were suspected by the NUM of wishing to take the strike over.
Miners' attendance of the funeral of a picket killed by a lorry at Keadby Power Station, Lincolnshire [spelt as Kidby in the transcript] is also recorded..
The bulk of the transcripts concern the Miners' views about industrial action at 'Saltley Gate', and their reception from Birmingham residents. Descriptions of being billeted in people's homes are given, and support received from passers by [including black workers] is noted. Racist attitudes displayed by some pickets towards strike breaking drivers is also recorded. The use of undercover police officers on the picket line is discussed as are miners' experiences of being arrested.
The long term value to miners of the 1972 strike settlement is also assessed. |
