DescriptionThis material consists of correspondence, accounts and the pedigree of the mare purchased by John Howard Galton. It comprises: letters written in English and sent to Galton by Messrs Robert Black & Co regarding their commission to purchase a mare and discussing the transport of the animal to England from Syria, dated 1850-1851; letters written in French and sent to Galton by Angelo Peterlini who appears to have been an agent working for Robert Black & Co, and who travelled to Syria to purchase the mare while on business for the King of Sardinia; pedigree of the mare, Noumai, in Arabic, with a French translation; accounts drawn up by Angelo Peterlini, written in Italian, giving details of expenses incurred by Galton's commission; page containing rough accounts, and a pencil sketch of a horse.
