| Description | Written in a blank notebook, this account contains daily entries describing a month long visit made by Joseph Strutt and his son Joseph Douglas Strutt (see MS3101/B/22/1 for a journal of the same journey written by Joseph Douglas Strutt). They travelled from Ramsgate to Dover, and from there took a packet boat for Calais on 21 Aug. They visit Boulogne, Abbeville, Amiens, Rouen, Paris, Valenciennes, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Ostend, where they sail back to Ramsgate, arriving in London on 22 Sept. The account provides detailed descriptions of their sea voyages, on which both father and son suffer from seasickness, and of their journeys between the towns they visit. It also contains substantial information about their sightseeing activities, which include visits to churches and cathedrals, museums, lace and cloth manufactories, and to the site of the battle of Waterloo. |
