| Description | Written in a blank notebook, this journal contains daily entries recording information about a month long visit to France, Belgium and the Netherlands made by Joseph Douglas Strutt, accompanied by his father Joseph Strutt (see MS3101/B/21/3 for Joseph Strutt's journal of this tour). The entries begin on 21 Aug when they left Dover for Calais and finish when the volume is full, on 13 Sept, before the end of the tour. They record much of the same information as those in his father's account, containing details about their itinerary from Calais, Boulogne, Abbeville, Amiens, Rouen, Paris, Valenciennes, Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Bruges and Ostend, and including descriptions about their sightseeing activities and their mode of transport between the towns they stayed in, but Joseph Douglas Strutt also records his impressions of the various places they visit and the surrounding countryside, the food he eats, and the character, dress and language of the people he observes and meets during his tour. A single day's entry often covers several pages. The inside front and back covers contain a sequence of pencilled characters, interspersed with odd words, which appear to be some kind of code or shorthand. |
