| Description | This material consists of a wide range of personal papers, including narrative accounts; diaries and journals; administrative and financial papers; and ephemera, created by or owned by individual members of the Galton family, or by individual members of the families that were related to them by marriage, including the Abrahams, Douglas, Farmer, and Strutt families. Also represented in this series is a small amount of material created or owned by members of the Fox and Hurt families, who were related to the Douglas and Strutt families by marriage, and, by extension, to the Galtons. It also contains a substantial number of official papers recording events in the lives of individual members of these families, such as birth and marriage certificates; passports; marriage settlements; apprenticeship indentures; court papers; financial deeds; wills and probate documents. Most of this material dates from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, although there is also a smaller amount of material dating from the seventeenth century. Some connections with material in this series can be found in the series of papers relating to property and estates, and in the business papers of Farmer & Galton. |
