| Description | Many of these letters were sent to John Howard Galton while he was at school in Oxford; others were sent to him while he was on a tour of Europe in 1817 and 1818. Three letters postdate 1818; the first was written shortly after his marriage to Isabella Strutt, and the others were written while John Howard Galton and his family were travelling in Italy. The letters focus primarily on family and domestic matters, and contain a wealth of information about daily life at Dudson, about the social engagements and travels of members of the family, and about the visits of relatives and family friends. The early letters in particular contain details about the animals and birds kept at Dudson, and about the garden. |
