Thinks it likely that he will be made governor for the following year, unless an officer now in England returns. Discusses his opportunities for making money from the gold trade, from duties at the castle, and from watering the shipping of different nations that come in. Postscript announces that his friend Charles Squire is to become Governor in January 1799 and he will be appointed senior officer.
