Announces that his friend Charles Squire is now governor of Apollonia Fort, about 70 miles away. He would like to visit him but the journey would be too expensive. Discusses the likelihood of his being promoted and mentions promotions at other forts. Discusses his financial situation in detail, and reflects on the ill health suffered by many in Africa due to the climate, including Governor Dalzel.
