| Description | Recording of interview by Philip Donnellan of Captain Alfred Ernest Horton (AEH) of Poole, Dorset (1883-1974) on 'Sailing Ships' where he describes his experiences on large cargo sailing ships abroad.
Track 1: Duration (min/sec): 3.37 Description of track: AEH talks about his experiences sailing in foreign seas as an able seaman on large sailing ships or steamers rather than being on a 'coaster' or 'brigantine' in local waters; refers to the weather on the long distant sailing trips and sailing around Cape Horn Track 2: Duration (min/sec): 6.27 Description of track: AEH talks about the crews on the ships which sailed abroad with men of varied nationalities Norwegians, Swedes, Dutch and Greeks; the first ship AEH sailed on abroad was a 1400 ton iron ship with wooden decks sailing to Melbourne carrying general cargo; one such voyage took 92 days out and 93 days back; AEH describes the layout of the ships and the crew's quarters Track 3: Duration (min/sec): 4.04 Description of track: AEH describes an incident on his first foreign voyage to Melbourne when the cook cleaning fish on the deck nicked the cabin boys eye with his knife and the cabin boy later lost the eye; in his experience though accidents and disease were rare at sea Track 4: Duration (min/sec): 2.11 Description of track: AEH talks briefly about the women sailors met at ports and the need for the men on board to know their jobs [tape stops abrubtly]
