Description(Tracks 1-7): John Williams, a mining engineer, talks to Charles Parker about working in mining in the 1930s, working as a manager to reorganize the pit so that it made money, changes in the industry after nationalisation, his father's relationship with his manager. They talk about capitalism and profits made in the mining industry, and say that the Coal Board still pays the old owners. They discuss changes in the union over the previous ten years and say that miners' leaders are becoming too remote. They discuss the Power Loading Agreement. He talks about the difficulties of working with managers who have been union officials. Charles Parker asks him about his feelings about current Coal Board policies and the impending fuel crisis. He talks about the money going out of the industries to companies, competition for contracts, and bureaucracy in the nationalised industry. John Williams says that miners are no longer interested in the union, although things have improved since Saltley Gate.
