DescriptionTracks 1 - 7: Actuality with 'Jim McHugh' from Edenderry, County Offaly, and a man from County Limerick, and an unidentified Irish man (see previous reels), and Charles Parker. The men speak about seasonal work on the peat bogs in Ireland. McHugh speaks about hardships of life as a poor person in Edenderry at the time. He describes having to go hungry and his family not having money for clothes as a child (1930s). McHugh describes a nurse helping his mother get money from a health officer and tea from a neighbour when he was born. He describes having no hope that things might improve, and when he was 14 realising that he had to (unwillingly) leave his family and Ireland to find work. He describes working in the pits in Scotland and sending money home to his parents. He describes the feelings of leaving Ireland as a teenager, moving to London and trying to find other Irish people there.
