The programme then discusses pop music before the arrival of rock and roll including the changes in music between the First and Second World Wars. Ewan MacColl discusses music in the 1930s, particularly the music of the American Depression; other critics including Richard Hoggart and Kingsley Amis comment on 1930s music. Adrian Mitchell talks about Cole Porter songs and Albert Hunt talks about Vera Lynn and other songs of the Second World War. The programme includes clips from the Rolling Stones 'Painted Black' and 'I Can't Get No Satisfaction'.
