DescriptionInterview with Cathy Craig, senior proof reader at the Scottish Braille Press. She continues to talk to Philip Donnellan about the influence that her school had over her future career plans which prevented her from training as a teacher, the different pattern that her life would have taken had she been able to teach French and German, and her views about being educated by blind teachers and their ability to maintain discipline. She talks about her ability to live an independent life and the lack of choice for blind people in employment which restricts independence. She talks about her mobility and her use of a white stick, and describes the methods she uses to travel to new places. She gives her opinions about newer mobility aids such as the long cane and sonar torch compared with the traditional mobility skills. She talks about the experience of gradually losing her sight as a child after having diptheria, her medical treatment and her education, her memory of colours and shapes, the sea and her home town. She talks about the equipment she uses for reading and writing, getting copies of braille books from London, the kinds of books she enjoys, her preference for novels and light reading over 'classics' and her dislike of being pitied by sighted people (tracks 1-12).
