Interview with Sister Aloysius, head teacher at St Vincent's school for blind children in Liverpool. She talks about teaching methods and equipment used for children with varying degrees of sight, and their separation from children who are blind during lessons. She discusses the reactions of the parents of partially sighted children to their child's condition and her opinion that life is more difficult for partially sighted children than for children who are blind because people find it more difficult to make adjustments for them. She talks about opportunities for children to study for academic qualifications and to enter grammar schools, further education or industry, and talks about the current situation of and jobs done by some recent school leavers. She describes the system of selection in operation at the school, based on an assessment by the school nurse and psychologist, and her concerns with the mobility of blind children following visits to the United States of America and Sweden. She talks about wanting to train children in the use of the long cane so that they can take part in a wider range of activities, the good relations with other Catholic schools in Liverpool and with the wider community in the city, and the size of the school. She goes on to talk about the number of female partially sighted students who get married, the question of how far students need to adjust to the sighted world, and the greater efforts necessary for blind children than those who are partially sighted (tracks 1-11).
