DescriptionTrack 1: sound effects of musical tones and a teacher discussing how a simulated set up can produce a range of outputs with different pitches and noise characteristics which can be used for teaching mobility 3.30 mins

Interview with unidentified teachers. They discuss methods of teaching mobility with the use of beams, monitoring touch output and sound output and the power necessary to simulate obstacles. They demonstrate some of the instruments developed to provide a representation of maps for blind people, the orientation skills taught with the help of such maps, and the use of a compass, map and road noise to identify locations. They describe how 'sighted' maps are converted for use by blind people, how braille readers can use raised symbols more easily to indicate the direction they need to move in, and the way the route is split into sections. They demonstrate how the compass is used, how Terry Moody, an economics student at Nottingham, has been taught balancing exercises, and the teaching of corrective mechanisms for greater mobility of blind people. Terry Moody talks about the lack of formal mobility training he received at school, his expectation that more of this kind of work should be done at schools for blind children and his experiences of being taught new mobility and orientation techniques. Further discussion focuses on concerns about the long cane. Terry Moody continues to discuss his education at St Vincent's in Liverpool and then at Worcester, and his experiences attending a sighted school for his final year before arriving at university (tracks 2-12).
