DescriptionInterview with Mr Hancocks. He continues to talk about the invisible barrier that he believes exists between blind and sighted people, and recounts instances of this barrier in operation when he trained as a home teacher and had difficulty in getting a post. Much of his treatment at this time amounted to explicit discrimination. He talks about working as a basket maker while waiting for a vacant post as a home teacher, feeling cut off from taking a role in local politics because of his condition and his reluctance to campaign against such discrimination. He describes receiving kindness and consideration from sighted people, but believes that they are not prepared to accept blind people as their equal and do not feel at ease with blind people. He discusses the requirements of blind people, the repetitive nature of the tasks that have to be done to assist them in their daily lives, and the tendency of sighted people to take control of these jobs themselves. He goes on to talk about the necessity for many blind people to have a guide, their desire to be independent and his feeling that sighted people do not like blind people asserting themselves (tracks 1-6).
