DescriptionInterview with Dr Abernathy. He talks about the origins and history of the Apprentice Boys and the involvement of the Apprentice Boys in events to mark the anniversary of the relief of Derry very soon after the actual events. He also discusses the history of the Orange Order, its beginnings in Armagh and its ideology and talks about his own involvement in both organisations. He discusses his family background in Derry and coming to live in the city after being appointed Medical Officer of Health in 1932. He gives his views about how the situation has changed since then, and discusses the extent to which sectarianism has increased through propaganda by both sides. He thinks that the disturbances of 1968 and 1969 were exploited by 'subversive elements' or Communist activists from outside the local area. He goes on to talk about his work in both Catholic and Protestant areas of the city and his admiration for some of the people he met from the Bogside. He returns to his discussion of the different Apprentice Boys clubs, the structure of the organisation, the activities and customs of the clubs and the role of the movement in the life of the city. He reads a prayer from the ceremony for the initiation of candidates and talks about the social activities that the clubs run (tracks 1-11).
