Interview at Creggan, Derry. Unidentified men and women talk about the need to make the British public aware of what is going on with the civil rights movement in Derry with the objective of getting parliament at Stormont dissolved and to have direct rule from Westminster. One of the men thinks that people in Northern Ireland need to have the same rights in housing and employment as people in the rest of Britain. He explains his belief that people in the rest of Britain get housing on the basis of need, while Charles Parker and Dilip Hiro try to argue that English people are not necessarily fair minded and emphasises the incidence of racial discrimination in English cities. The men and women make a comparison between the position of Catholics in Derry and black and Asian people in England, and explain how peoples religion can be identified through the voting register, the schools their children attend, attendance at mass, the people they are married to. They talk about how they identify people's religion through death notices in the local newspaper and the process of striking that person off the electoral register so that no one can use their vote. They go on to talk about how to identify people's religion through differences in dress, the levels of immigration to Northern Ireland amongst ex-servicemen and the voting patterns of people who move there. One of the men thinks that there will be trouble if a Conservative government is elected in the rest of Britain (tracks 1-8).

Track 10: silence 1.35 mins

The interview continues with men discussing some of the rebel songs that are sung and the risks that people take in singing them in public in being charged with breaching the peace and taken to Crumlin Road prison. They discuss the singing of rebel songs on 15th August, a Catholic feast day celebrated by lighting bonfires, and the lack of police action on that night. They equate the state control exerted over them with that of an authoritarian regime. One man goes on to talk about his daily routine while unemployed, his inability to sleep and feeling that he is wasting his life. He talks about the importance of re-educating himself politically and the risks involved in joining any Nationalist party, partly because of the pressure to be seen looking for work at all times and the possibility of having benefits taken away (tracks 11-16).
